Patrick Lwasampijja- Visual Artist
"The works in this collection represent some of the projects I have made/been involved with individually or in collaboration with others."
My contact with art goes as far back as I can remember having been born to an artist the late associate professor George Kagaba Kakooza and late Mrs Celia Kakooza (nurse & midwife). I grew up around art and artists. I remember as a youngster in school being asked by my teachers to help draw diagrams like maps on the board during some of my geography lessons - my work is now a long way away from maps. I have good memories of working on some of my father's projects which was both educative and exciting. In addition to the support and encouragement I got from my father, I also had outstanding teachers along the way.
I graduated with honours in 1993 from the then Margaret Trowel School of Fine Art with a BAFA first-class degree from Makerere University, which is in Kampala Uganda. Specializing in sculpture and painting. I went on to read for my masters in Arts and Interdisciplinary Studies (MAIS) 1996, at Oregon State University in the United States and more recently (2004) graduated from the University of Derby with a teaching qualification (Cert Ed.). As an Apple Teacher, I have since added to the scope of what I am able to achieve as an artist and educationist.
On completion of my studies in America, I returned to Uganda and worked in the HE sector as an Art lecturer at Kyambogo, Nkumba and Makerere. In 2001, I migrated to United Kingdom which has since become home to my family and I. Two years of study and work in the United States as well as four years of work in Uganda are reflected in some of my works.
The earlier themes revolve around the smallest unit of society ‘family’. My most recent projects are dealing with society and how it has impacted the greater community we live in. I am interested in the characteristics of materials, their behaviour, the interplay of light, shadow and textures, especially in sculpture.
I have also tried to solve the problem of weight and lack of sculpting materials by coming up with alternatives while at the same time keeping the essence of subject and integrity of the materials I use. My passion is sculpture but I am also comfortable in other areas of art. I make Prints, Paintings, Photography (covered social events), Computer-aided designs and Animation.
The works in this collection are a representation of some of the projects that I have made/been involved with as an individual as well as in collaboration with others. This includes a monumental sculpture started in 1971 by my father and was completed by yours truly, with the involvement of staff within the Sculpture Department at Makerere University for the universities golden jubilee celebrations.
Working out of my studio in the Midlands, I continue to exploring and develop new ways of looking at our environment. I am also always looking out for a way to integrate traditional and contemporary methods of art.
As a lecturer/teacher with over 20 years of experience teaching at various institutions of learning at different levels across the world, I have given and still continue to give back to my community through various workshops, exhibitions, training, lecturers, seminars, e.t.c.
